Mobility in Wireless Networks - challenges and opportunities
NSF workshop - Rutgers, July 31-Aug 1, 2007

Organizers:
Mario Gerla, UCLA, gerla@cs.ucla.edu
Dipankar Raychaudhuri, Rutgers University, ray@winlab.rutgers.edu

The theme of this workshop is wireless mobility. The past two decades have witnessed a major shift from fixed to mobile phones. The same shift is happening now from fixed to mobile Internet access - using laptops, PDAs and Smart Phones. Moreover, this trend is now bringing Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs), once confined to battlefield and civilian emergency scenarios, to every day urban and domestic applications.

The goal of the Workshop is to bring into focus the critical research issues involving wireless mobility. We seek answers to questions such as: what is the impact of mobility on wireless applications; how can the Infrastructure help manage mobility; how can mobility be used to advantage (in routing, content discovery, connectivity management). How can we best test the new mobility trade offs with mobility testbeds? What mobility models are most appropriate for the various emerging applications? Research on mobility is already progressing in several of the above areas.

The intended outcome of the Workshop is to set the foundations for a common framework for motion models, applications and testbeds that can be leveraged by future researchers in this area. A common framework will make it easier to incorporate new contributions, share experimental testbeds and results, and map future trends. The report will include recommendations for the funding of future research activities towards developing this framework.
